Upgrade hardware firmware of HP Chassis C7000 and its HP Blade systems hardware firmwares using SPP

Overview: In this below article we will update the hardware firmware of HP Chassis C7000 and its components such as OA – Onboard Administration, VC – Virtual Connect, HP VC FlexFabric , Power and Therminal firmware and others also we can update the hardware firmware of the HP Blade iLO servers and other hardware inside of it.

Step 1: Download the latest HP  (Service Pack for ProLiant) – HP SPP Version 2015.10.0 in there website or use the latest release from here

HP Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) is a comprehensive systems software and firmware update solution, which is delivered as a single ISO image. This solution uses HP Smart Update Manager (HP SUM) as the deployment tool and is tested on all HP ProLiant Gen9, Gen8 and earlier servers as defined in the Service Pack for ProLiant Server Support Guide found at www.hp.com/go/spp/documentation

And also this is supported by various operating systems such as below:

Step 2: After downloading the .ISO file you can mount or extract the .ISO file so that we can run the executable HP application to update the HP Chassis remotely. For this article I extracted the .ISO file using the 7zip application as shown below.


Step 3: Open the folder and dig in to the “C:\<your folder path here>HP_SPP\843216_001_spp_2015.10.0-SPP2015100.2015_0921.6\hp\swpackages\x64”


and select the file called “hpsum_bin_x64.exe” by double clicking the file and it will open small MS-DOS windows just leave it run and then it will open your default web browser.

*Note: make sure you ‘Run-as Administrator’ the file hpsum_bin_x64.exe


Step 4: In the web browser that was opened browse to the Menu to create a baseline that will be use to patch the HP Chassis and HP Blade servers.

and then click the “Start Inventory” or “Add Baseline” and then after few minutes it will show completed as shown below.




Step 5: Now we start to add the HP C7000 IP Address or DNS Hostname

HP Smart Update Manager 7.4.0 -> Enclosure -> Add Enclosure


Make sure you fillup this below important options

  • IP/DNS – This is your full DNS/FQDN or IP address of your HP Chassis
  • Type of node to add – This is your OA select the “Onboard Administrator” and check the check box “Auto Add Associated Nodes”
  • Baseline – This is the baseline that we created in earlier steps


*Note: there will be option to type the credentials below if you scroll down make sure you type the username and password of your HP C7000 admin credentials to make this work.


Step 6: Then click “Add” this will start to scan all the components of the chassis including blade systems then

Step 7: After the scan is completed it will show below image and then click the “Inventory” to start again the hardware component discovery

Now Discovery is completed we can proceed to click the “Review and deploy updates” to install packages needed to update the hardware firmware

Step 8: Click the IP address or hostname that you want to update and then click the “Action” in the upper right corner to apply the firmware patch
