Alternative Third party free tools to manage your Hyper-V Virtualization

There are three management GUI that you can evaluate to use in your Home Lab

1. PSHVM 3.0 (PSHVM30 the all GUI Powershell Hyper-V Manager)

This is a FREE software for personal use its good for your Home Lab however if it will be use for corporate environment  there will be a cost $$ and there are two versions of this:

  • PSHVM standaloneversion 3.0

Works great and has all the features you need and

  • Intergrated PSHVM 3.0 with Corefig 1.1

Can be accessed as either standalone or from within corefig Main page Hyperv Manger Button. Use it from the core 2012 server console or it can even run on the GUI server 2012, I have tested it on both.

  • File Manager with shortcuts at the bottom to launch apps
  • Set the Virtual Machine and HardDisk paths for the VHost
  • Create/Remove a vSwitch
  • Advanced NIC and vSwitch features like NIC Teaming (thanks to Eric Siron)
  • Create a new vm with a new VHDx file or from and existing VHDx
  • Start/Stop/Connect to a VM

2. Corefig v1.1.1

Corefig is a free Open Source tool that you can download from CodePlex and install locally on your Hyper-V Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 Server Core hosts.

Once installed, it provides a local GUI console tool that can be used to perform useful tasks such as:

  • Server renaming and domain joining
  • Role and feature management
  • Service control
  • Remote Desktop Host and Remote Management configuration
  • Windows Update settings
  • Display settings configuration
  • Windows firewall settings
  • Driver installation
  • Regional settings ( keyboard, date and time )
  • Add Programs
  • Network card settings, including TCP/IP
  • Proxy configuration
  • Local group membership
  • Share management
  • iSCSI Initiator Configuration
  • MPIO ( Multipath-IO ) Configuration
  • Basic Hyper-V Management: Start, Stop and View Virtual Machines
  • Windows Server licensing and activation

Of course, you can still use the full GUI tools, such as Hyper-V Manager, Server Manager and Failover Cluster Manager, remotely for more sophisticated management and configuration tasks, but it’s certainly handy to have a way to perform these basic tasks from a local GUI tool.

3. 5nine Manager

5nine Manager – Free Edition provides a local Graphical User Interface for Windows Server (including Server Core) and Microsoft Hyper-V Server. The Free Edition of 5nine Manager support any version of Hyper-V (Windows Server 2012 R2 / Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 / Windows Server 2012 / Hyper-V Server 2012 / Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 / Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1) from a single management console, remotely or locally.

It is an ideal Hyper-V management solution for all Microsoft virtualization environments.

You can use it when Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), or even Hyper-V Manager are not available for GUI-less Core or Free editions of Windows Server, or Microsoft Hyper-V Server. Dramatically simplify and save money on Hyper-V management

  • Get a user-friendly management GUI for Windows Server Core and Microsoft Hyper-V Server
  • Manage different Hyper-V versions (2012 R2/ 2012/ 2008 R2 SP1) from a single console.
  • And more

5nine Manager could be run either locally or remotely. The solution also provides cluster management capabilities, built-in performance monitoring and agentless patent-pending antivirus.
